Guest Post! The Dolphin - Hursley

We welcome our first guest writer to the blog, Heather Barber.

Tonight's selection:
Chocolate Fudge cake and cream

The cake was not warmed up in the slightest. Despite my best efforts to get Joel to ask for them to heat it up, it remained cold.

Fishers Pond - Colden Common

Tonight's selection:
Gammon - £7.25

The second weekly bike2pub from work saw us take an 8 mile jaunt through the Hampshire countryside to the Fishers Pond pub. The outside tables have a really nice view over the pond/lake, and if the weather was sunny it would be really nice to sit and watch what was going on. As it was, we were keeping an eye out for the downpour we were expecting to occur at some point, and there was a stiffening breeze.

For £7.25 I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised; a generous portion of chips, about 9mm thick gammon, two eggs (although a little to firm for chip dunking) and a token piece of pineapple.

The girl behind the bar appeared to be one of the most dippy barstaff I've come across, with a queue at the rapidly forming as she bumbled about. (One bloke asked for a Cinzano and lemonade, but she didn't even know what it was - he remarked 'I thought everywhere had Cinzano', and I'd have to agree with him.)

Inside appeared a little dark, but outside it was nice, although on a sunnier day would probably have been more packed. As it was the fresh air was nice for four people who had just cycled a fair way.

The Dolphin - Hursley

Tonight's selection:
Gammon - £? (I'll check tonight)

The Dolphin is a favourite haunt of mine for the Thursday night quiz, and all too often the uber-burger is ordered (double bacon cheeseburger with an egg), but the gammon can be as equally as epic. Sourced from the butcher in the village, it is famed for being really thick and juicy, and some would claim salty, but i'd say it was very tasty :)

Whether it is delivered with one or two eggs is often hit or miss, so I always ask for the second as it definitely needs it

Hursley Clubhouse - IBM Hursley

Today's selection:
Gammon - £? (Can't remember)

A trip to the clubhouse for lunch at work was always going to result in the purchase of gammon, given that I have so far managed to not review it.

It was a hearty piece of gammon, with two eggs and a good array of chips. All set off with a nice view over the cricket pitch, sat outside on a glorious summers day.

Gammon: 7.5/10

I'll be back for more no doubt :)

(I did have a picture somewhere... can't find it now though)

Maison du Wright

Tonight's selection:
Gammon - £0
Warm chocolate fudge cake & ice cream - £0

Ok, so maybe this isn't going to be a fair fight!
Joel obtained a huge hunk of gammon, and offered to cook some for me, and in order to complement the dish I made a chocolate fudge cake.
The gammon started off at over an inch think, so things were looking up from the outset :) To complement the immense gammon, probably 3 eggs would have covered it nicely but I had to make do with two owing to restricted pan space and eggs between the three of us. As an aside to the meat a rather nice potato&onion rosti/hashbrown affair was provided, very tasty!
The chocolate fudge cake was quite dense, and very chocolatey, and after I made an epic amount of fudge icing - very gooey too! Together with two scoops of ice-cream, the cake went down very well.
(It later transpired that the cake was possibly still too warm when i put the icing on - and as a result the overall texture of the cake was much better the next day!)

Will go again!

The Mayfly, Stockbridge

Tonights selection: Gammon - £11.95

A very nice pub, if pricey, on the banks of the river test. A large beer garden decking area overlooking the river makes this an excellent summer pub.
Unfortunately the gammon was thin, and only a single egg served with it. Personally I'm a fan of the inch thick gammon with two eggs, so as such i'm going to have to mark it down. The addition of new potatoes with a mixed herb coating, along with copious amounts of peas and a grilled tomato was not enough to bring it back.

Rating, 5/10
